Quality Reciprocal LinksHow do you go about finding links? What type of links are you looking for? One of the most popular methods is to email webmasters and suggest an exchange links via a links page or the ubitiquous resource page. You know the type of email. "We have looked at your gorgeous website and think an exchange of links would benefit both websites and improve search engine rankings". "We will give you a link on our links page" - yippee I would just love to be the 235th link on this page.Does Google like these link pages? Google does indeed look for hyperlinks and they encourage you to hyperlink to other sites. But Google easily recognises link and resource pages. Google will also find the reciprocal link on your site and recognise the link relationship between the two sites. OK - so the next step is to setup 3-way reciprocal links. Site A links to Site B; and a Site C provides the reciprocal link back to Site A. Do you really think that Google does NOT discover the link relationship? Of course, they do. These "reciprocal" links pass little PR to your site. Do you make it easy for Google? Many sites telegraph their linking strategy by hyperlinking the same keyword on every reciprocal site. So what is Google looking for? Google works because of hyperlinks to sites - so links are very important. In short the key is natural "content links". Google does not like too many external links on a page. These natural links are embedded in text on a web page. For example, a page describing the process of buying a property might have a natural link in the text linking to an external site with properties listed. Google would think this link is valuable because it is on "theme" and is recommended by the source website. New Link Strategy The new approach is less easy to automate but the extra effort will be rewarded! First you need to create good content on your website. Other sites will want to link to good content, and you will pick up natural links. However, you might want to encourage more content links. Look for quality sites on your theme and find pages where a link to your site would prove useful to visitors of that site. Contact the webmaster and tell him that you have some great content that would complement the information on his page. Anchor Text Be careful when choosing the anchor text for a link. Remember to vary anchor text, and make sure you are linking to page on your site that is SEO optimised for that keyword. |
